"We have a natural advantage because we are at the head of the lake, which has driven industry as far back as when the canal was first opened in 1851. Now, we have 49 industries located here."

Fincantieri's investment in the area is set to continue, as negotiations for the construction of a second assembly slip have commenced, potentially bringing more job opportunities to the workforce soon.

Beyond shipbuilding, other industries are driving growth in the city's manufacturing sector.

A prime example is Bay Shore Builders, a metal fabrication company specializing in shipbuilding and naval salvage work. Their company has become one of the top contractors for Fincantieri, providing thousands of tons of steel work for its marine clients annually.

"Our biggest market is clearly shipbuilding," emphasized Director of Business Development Bryan Ruchalski, during an interview with HTR News Manitowoc regarding their increasing orders in the area.

Manufacturers such as Bay Shore are benefitting from the opportunities furnished by Manitowoc's port access. While its shipping infrastructure might not compare to larger ports further East, its advantages extend to manufacturing partnerships for shipping entities that prioritize domestic suppliers for repair and maintenance parts purposes.

Other prominent manufacturing operations within the city feature esteemed players like J.E. Olson & Associates Inc. which supplies engineering and production for the food-processing components.

CEO J.C. Smith proudly describes Manitowoc's growth, 'Manufacturing is by some distance Manitowoc's top contributing element; over half of its businesses derive some form of commerce right here from its surrounding areas'.
